On, Thursday, December 30 around 9am, Tonya was thinking about her favorite movie of 2004. She said:

CPH and I rushed up north after work on Tuesday to see A Very Long Engagement. I knew I was going to like this movie. It was written (adapted) and directed by the same guy who did Amelie.
I didnt know that I was going to be so entranced in the movie that I could have watched it for a second time immediately following the first.
As soon as the movie had finished, I leaned over to CPH and told him that I had made my decision for best film of 2004. He questioned my assertion. What about The Village?

Damn.

I really cant make my decision yet. Ive only seen both films once. But I can tell you what I liked about both films and leave it open for discussion.

What I liked about The Village
1.The melodrama.
2.The fact that the (first) plot twist was revealed, not at the very end, but a fair amount of time before the movie ended. I liked this for this reason only: I knew the truth, just as Ivy did, but I was still just as frightened when those we do not speak of came to visit her on her mission to the towns.
3.The love story. Ivy holding out her hand for Lucius will forever be etched in mind.

What I liked about A Very Long Engagement
1.Mathildes belief that, in two unrelated events, fate can be determined.
2.The movie is not focused, so much, on the love story, but on Mathildes search for her love.
3. The comparison of Tina and Mathilde.
4.Ok, so I know this is shallow, butIll say it. The movie is in French. Theres just something likable, nay shall I say, favorited in my heart, about people speaking French.

On, Monday, December 27 around 11am, Tonya was thinking about Christmas with the in-laws. She said:

Went to CPH’s parents on Thursday night, which was supposed to be the family’s Christmas Eve, since we were celebrating Christmas on Christmas Eve because CPH and I were supposed to drive to my mom’s in KY on Christmas Day.

So, on Christmas Eve Eve, we went to the in-laws for a make your own pizza party. Mother-in-law, year after year, puts up a Canadian Outdoor Adventure (we, in America, do houses, she does outdoor activities, because as we all know that Canadian’s do fun things outside even in the dead of winter). Father-in-law decides to do a creepy (but fun) cut out of a family portrait that was done on Thanksgiving and set it in the middle of the village scene.
I tried to take a picture of the family without the flash but it was, of course, too shaky. So, father-in-law unwraps one of his presents early and shazam – a non-shaky, natural light picture of the Beeler family in the Canadian Outdoor Adventure Village.

Now, I have no idea if CPH took this picture or if I was the photographer. I have no idea, because we both loved playing with Father-in-law’s tripod so much that we took nearly 20 pictures of the village.
Brother-in-law and Sister-in-law had originally planned on driving in on Christmas Eve Eve, but because of Blizzard ‘04, they stayed put until Christmas Eve morning. They arrived around 3pm on Christmas Eve. Here they are. Brother-in-law, at this point, is telling, I think, his third religious joke.

We had a good Christmas, even though we couldn’t make it to Kentucky.
Biggest surprise – opening a tripod of our very own. Yippee!

Didn’t make it home to Kentucky this year. (Thanks, biggest snow in southern Indiana since I was a wee baby).
After we opened presents at the in-laws, I made my first attempt at a gingerbread house since my elementary school days. This is Cat the Rat’s house. His friend Butterly the RedAnt just dropped him off and he’s a bit hungover.
Poor Cat.

This picture describes, perfectly, my mood as of late. These past few days, I sit at my desk at work, trying to get the stuff done that needs to be done before we leave for a long weekend and I am entranced by my sadness. I can not explain the reason that tears drop down my cheeks and I am bewildered by this feeling of helplessness.
More baffling than not knowing the reasons behind my depression is not knowing the reasons behind my full recovery. The gut-wrenching sadness has passed and I am myself once more. I laugh, I joke, I bop my head and tap the desk to the poppy sounds coming from my headphones.

On a happier note, Christmas presents are nearly done. Better said – Christmas presents that will be passed out before the new year are nearly done.

Last night in recognition of CPH’s mom (’s birth), we headed over to the local Melting Pot for a birthday celebration. None of us had ever been, I think, all realizing the exorbitance that would surely be witnessed by anyone seeing us walk out of the restaurant.
But we sucked it up and ate (and enjoyed) the most expensive meal any of us had ever paid for. It was a good meal, but I can’t say that it was worth the $50 dollars a person that it cost us..and by us, I mean CPH’s dad.
Give me a plate piled high with Cajun food and I’ll give you five bucks and we’ll both be happy.

On, Tuesday, December 14 around 5pm, Tonya was thinking about alzheimer’s and my ability to smell. She said:

My grandfather suffered through alzheimer’s, so I’ve always been interested in the scientific studies surrounding it.

Here’s the newest one. Fascinating to know that we might be able to tell who has the propensity for this disease by putting some propane sratch and sniff stickers in front of them and watching to see if they notice the scent. Comforted to know that, as of right now, CPH can clearly smell propane (even on scratch and sniff stickers – as demonstrated on the gas bill last month).

Dear God: If I’m ever to be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, promise to kill before I realize that I can’t smell cloves anymore.

But, alas, I have so many gifts to complete.

Saturday night, CPH and I headed over to B* and L*’s for a Christmas Dinner.

I love to watch the G*’s interact with their toddler. So many times I hear parents talking to their children in a degrading tone or not explaining their reasonings behind the laws that they set for their children. What I like most about B* and L* is that they try to explain to H* why he is being told No.

amy wondered "You know, the more I think about it plenty of people put laptops on their lap. I distinctly remember both eric and your husband putting laptops on their lap over thanksgiving break. And dh is right, when i sit on my couch, I do put the laptop on my lap. do you not?"

heater interrupted "i sit on my couch when i use my laptop. and so does nathan. AND he puts it on his lap! oh wait, now things are starting to make sense!! :)"

eric agreed "it’s true. i do put it on my lap when i’m sitting on the couch, but did we really need a study to show us this? how could you not guess that a great deal of heat near your XXXX (i’ll put x’s so as to keep strange google searches from bringing up your site) would be detrimental? what i wonder is if computer companies will use these findings to their advantage: get a laptop and birth control, all for one low price."

Then, dh agreed "Or maybe I’ll sue all the laptop companies for the outcome that has befallen me."

The crowd gasped! eric remarked "looks like it’s win-win for dh."

B* and P* stopped by for a quick visit last night and brought us coffee and cheesecake. CPH was sitting, with his new laptop in front of him, at the dining room table working on end-of-the-semester things that people do at the end of the semester. I was sitting on the stairs with my knitting needles in hand working on one of my many gifts. P* commented how she loved this picture of the Beelers – me doing my knitting and CPH doing his homework.
This is the second time that B* has seen us like this. The other time we showed up at The Abbey – CPH with a book and me with my knitting needles.
So my question is this – Am I becoming the doting wife who sits and knits while my husband is slaving away at his education?

On, Monday, December 6 around 10am, Tonya was thinking about how it just doesn’t feel like christmas. She said:

I’m just not in the christmas spirit. I have not purchased a Christmas tree. I have not put on a Christmas Album. I have not wrapped all my presents and seperated them by days they will be delivered.
I have a theory about this.
I have not done any shopping for Christmas presents.

Is it possible that, to me, Christmas is all about the shopping?

Maybe if I could look at my weekly trip to Michaels as shopping for Christmas Presents, everything would be ok.


Someone opened their mouth to speak, but heater suggested "i think it’s all about the shopping, IF that’s what you make it. i’m almost done with my shopping, but i like to get done early so that i can enjoy the christmas season with my family and friends. i know, that sounds generic, but it’s true!"

Someone opened their mouth to speak, but amy said "no way! that doesn’t mean it’s all about the shopping. but i think that shopping does help with the christmas spirit because those stores have the things you lack. christmas decorations, trees and music. so string up some lights and play some christmas music. i also highly recommend christmas cookie making and christmas movie watching to get that christmas spirit. i usually wait for the christmas spirit to hit me and then it hits right when christmas is a day from being over and i miss it. what are you waiting for?"

dh whispered "“because those stores have the things you lack.” doesn’t that sentence seem really sad for some reason. maybe it *is* all about shopping? i heard an interview about christ having been so removed from christmas that the writer suggested, instead of “keep christ in christmas,” it become, “save christ from christmas.” he looked at MLK day as a celebration of the life of MLK, the things that MLK worked for. Old JC was about his life and, more importantly perhaps, his resurrection. move christ over to easter and have a good one of those instead. it was an interesting editorial and echoes what you are saying, tonya."

A hush of silence fell across the room. Tonya remarked "interesting op.ed, dh. But sadly, Christ (or the lack, therof) is playing no part in my feeling less than Christmas-y. I’ve rarely associated Christ with Christmas and tended to focus more on him during the Easter holiday (much like the NPR contributor). And I only decided to make my Christmas presents this year – not to stick it to the retail monsters – but simply because I was feeling crafty. I’m tagging along with a friend this week as she finishes up her shopping, so maybe that will help ?"

A hush of silence fell across the room. heater protested "but we wouldn’t have easter if it weren’t for christmas. we just started a new series about christmas at our church. this past weekend, the sermon was about mary, but in a way that was different than what i had expected. it was all about how mary was willing to be a servant and to empty herself to be used by God. i am excited to hear the rest of the series."

Someone coughed quietly. Tonya divulged "I’m sorry, but “empty herself to be used by God” sounds a little creepy. And, wouldn’t it be more correct to say, we wouldn’t have Easter without Christ’s Birth?"

Everyone looked at the floor. Then, CPH preached "I think that buying things is a ritual, like stringing Christmas lights, decorating a tree, or listening to Christmas music. I also don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing."

eric remarked "you all have it wrong about christmas and easter. why does it seem that those types of sites either have way too much color or no color at all?"

Tonya agreed "Which makes it that much harder to view it at work. People who are walking by are much more drawn to sites with bright colors. Which, is to say, drawn to my own page. damn."

Everyone looked at the floor. Then, heater whispered "i didn’t mean for it to sound creepy. i’m embarrassed now. :)"

Someone opened their mouth to speak, but eric said "heater, your comments in no way inspired those links. i just have this weird fascination with sites like that."

Someone coughed quietly. heater said "shew!! i guess i can crawl out from underneath this rock and come back into the light. :)"

The crowd gasped! Sister-in-law cried "So what dooo you want for Christmas? I haven’t done any shopping either. But, just go into Starbucks, as they’ve been playing Christmas music for weeks. Nay, a month now!"

CPH is in the midst of applying for PHD work and I’m helping him by reading his writing sample and statement of purpose and I’m sitting here amazed that I’m married to this guy who can write about history so beautifully that I’m tempted to pull out my camera and take a picture of the words that flow on the paper more breath-takingly than the sunset I gasped at when I was a child.
The second most wonderful boy in the world (CPH is the first, in case you were wondering) is applying to schools too and he just asked me if I wouldn’t mind reading his writing sample and I’m all giddy inside because I’m getting to read not one great piece of writing in one night, but two.
And, this weekend one of our friends was hired to write for a very well known (or so I’m told) Harry Potter Fan Site.
And I can’t help but think that it must say something good about me that I’m surrounded by all these great thinkers and writers.
